Kansas City, Missouri’s 39th Street West business district and its surrounding Volker neighborhood is home not only to great shopping and dining, but part of Kansas City’s rich history as well. The Volker neighborhood, one of the city’s earliest suburban developments, flourished during Kansas City’s turn of the century expansion. The historic Roselawn estate is located in the 39th Street district, once the home of German immigrant, entrepreneur and philanthropist William Volker, for whom the Volker neighborhood is named. Painter and muralist Thomas Hart Benton’s home and studio is also located in the 39th Street area. Once home to a Safeway grocery store, druggist, and hardware purveyor, 39th Street West is now populated with hip eateries providing various international cuisine as well as boutique retail establishments ranging from vintage women’s wear to bicycles.
